Founded in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, in 1888, the MBL is a private, nonprofit institution and an affiliate of the University of Chicago.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is a private, independent organization dedicated to marine research, engineering, and higher education. Established in 1930 on a recommendation from the National Academy of Sciences, its primary mission is to understand the oceans and their interaction with the Earth as a whole, and to communicate a basic understanding of the oceans’ role in the changing global environment.

The Woods Hole Research Center is a private, non-profit research organization focusing on environmental sciences. We measure, model, and map changes in the world’s ecosystems, from the thawing permafrost in the Arctic to the expanding agriculture regions of the tropics, working locally, regionally and globally to merge natural science with economics as we discover sustainable paths for human prosperity and stewardship of the Earth’s natural resources.
